Last Chance Vegetable Gardening

Due to the popularity of this topic we have added another workshop which will
address the plants that can still be planted and harvested before the end of
the season (summer). Mounts’ Horticulturist, Mike Page will teach you how to
successfully grow your own vegetables, covering everything from seed to
germination to harvest. Tips and techniques will be shared on how to have a
productive garden and enjoy fresh chemical-free produce. All participants will
receive a vegetable seedling to take home. Register now as we sold out last
time and had a waiting list.

Garden Digital Photography Workshop

expand your photographic skills. He will help you learn how to make the most
of your equipment you own, inform you about additional equipment you may want
to use in the future, and provide the kind of instruction that will help you
capture nature's beauty in amazing ways. Learn, practice, critique, and
improve your skills during this workshop- a great opportunity to learn from an
expert.A Digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera is required. Reserve your

Florida Arbor Day

The Original Going Green, Growing Green Arbor Day was first celebrated in
Nebraska in 1872. By 1894 every state celebrated Arbor Day and has since
spread to other countries. Mounts Botanical Garden celebrates the day of
trees and the impact they have in our lives and on our world. We invite you to
share the third annual celebration of trees. Join us for our festivities
including a proclamation read by the County Commissioners, VIP speakers, a
tree dedication in the Garden and refreshments. The first 200 attendees will
receive a seedling to nurture in their own landscape.

Beguiling Begonias

Discover the fabulous perennial landscape begonias that grow so well in South
Florida. This lecture will show you, with slides and live plants, the various
types of rhizomatous, cane, and other begonias that will thrive in your
garden. In the workshop that follows, each participant will learn how to
propagate these begonias and will pot up a tray of assorted cuttings to take
home. Price includes potting materials and begonia cuttings. After the
workshop, you will have the opportunity to expand your begonia collection from
a selection of mature begonias available for sale.

Everglades Agriculture Area Tour

Join this westward tour of Palm Beach County's "Black Gold" area to learn about
the native muck farmlands, unlike any other in the U.S. Discover how
sugarcane, vegetables and rice are grown, harvested and processed
commercially. This tour, including a sugarcane processing plant, vegetable
farm and rice mill- is exceptionally educational and insightful. A continental
breakfast and boxed lunch will be provided (please specify turkey or

Refining Your Garden: A Tropical Gardening Symposium

Come join us for an information-packed day about gardening in the tropics. Our
keynote speaker is Holly Shimizu, Executive Director of the U.S. Botanic
Garden in Washington, D.C., and formerly host of the PBS series The Victory
Garden. Holly will discuss Tropical Garden Design. Holly has recently
completed the redesign of Mounts’ Herb Garden, and she will also present a
workshop on Creating a Tropical Herb Garden. Charles Jaros, past President
of the American Begonia Society, noted horticultural exhibitor and
international horticultural judge, will speak on The Beauty of Begonias.
Also on the agenda are workshops by tropical gardening experts: Lloyd
Singleton, Landscape Manager of the Breakers Palm Beach and Palm Beach Chapter
President of FNGLA will conduct a hands-on workshop Creating Beautiful
Containers. Workshop attendance is limited; reserve early. Steven Royer,
Mounts’ Director of Development, will give a workshop Tropical Ferns for your
Garden. Chad Husby, Collections Manager and Botanist at Montgomery
Gardens in Miami, will give a workshop on Tropical Conifers. This day of
refining your tropical gardening concludes with a conversation between our own
Allen Sistrunk, Garden Director of Mounts Botanical Garden, and Georgia
Tasker, garden writer for the Miami Herald and author of Enchanted Ground,
Gardening with Nature in the Subtropics, and co-author with Tom McCubbin of
Florida Gardeners Guide. Allen and Georgia will conduct A Conversation on
Gardening in South Florida. Exceptional plants and an assortment of related
books will be for sale.

How to Make Everything Come Up Roses

Mounting & Repotting Orchids

This workshop with instructors Tom Wells and Sandi Jones of Broward Orchid
Supply, students will learn what orchids need--water, light, fertilizer,
temperature. Attendees are encouraged to bring an orchid up to 6 inches to
repot or mount. Several methods will be demonstrated such as potting and
mounting on tree fern, cork bark or grapevine. Orchid supplies and small
orchids will be available to purchase.

Designing, Creating & Maintaining Your Home Landscape

This four session workshop will take you through all the steps needed
to improve your home landscape. Session One includes an evaluation of your
site conditions, how to avoid common landscape mistakes, and a review of
good design principles. A homework assignment prepares you for Session Two
which begins with a tour of Mounts Botanical Garden to see and discuss a large
number of plants suitable for South Florida. You will also learn
about purchasing, planting and establishing the plants. In Session
Three, experienced gardeners work closely with you to address problem areas
you identify in your landscape, evaluate your ideas and discuss options. With
your new landscape mapped out, Session Four will focus on how to maintain it
with tips and techniques to conserve water, reduce pesticide use, and minimize
labor so you can spend more time enjoying the results. Please register by

Creative Container Gardening

Create beautiful container arrangements using complimentary foliar and
flowering plants suitable to our sub-tropical South Florida climate. In this
open-discussion style lecture, with instructor Nestor Garrido of The Breakers
Palm Beach, we will cover topics including types of containers, the aesthetic
affects one can achieve through various container choices and about plants and
combinations that grow well in containers. Each participant will create their
own container step by step. Everything from preparing the container, soil mix,
and nutrients to choosing, arranging and actually installing plants will be
demonstrated. Please specify shade or sun container preference when
registering.

Earth Day Celebration

The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden today announced that Palm Beach County’s
oldest and largest public garden will be celebrating Earth Day on Wednesday,
April 22, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. In addition to Mounts, the “Go Green” event is
being co-sponsored by the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service and
the Florida Atlantic Region of Hadassah’s Green Team in cooperation with
Environmental Resources Management. “At this special Celebration of the
Planet, we will present short seminars in which attendees can learn about the
environment and how every person can make a difference, one step at a time,”
says event organizer Beverly Miller, a member of the Mounts board of
directors. “This festive Earth Day event will also include delicious
refreshments of tropical fruit, salads and desserts, followed by guided tours
and photo shoots of Mounts Botanical Garden, which is one of South Florida’s
true environmental treasures.” Lloyd Singleton, landscape manager at The
Breakers Palm Beach, will give the keynote speech on Earth Day. His topic:
Growing Local, Buying Local, Eating Local. Teri Jabour, program coordinator
at Grassy Waters Preserve, Office Sustainability with the City of West Palm
Beach (and another member of the Mounts board) will discuss How to make Every
Day Earth Day and Greening Your City. Faculty of the Palm Beach County
Cooperative Extension Service will also give Earth Day presentations: +

Spring Plant Sale

Versatile Bromeliads

This workshop is for beginner and advanced bromeliad growers to discover the
many bromeliads that grow so well in South Florida. Jeff Hutchinson and Joe
Libertucci of the Boca Raton Bromeliad Society will identify the variations
that thrive in the sunny, shady, and other challenging areas of your Florida
garden. Tips on the best bromeliad growing culture—watering, light
requirements, pests and fertilizing—will be explained using live plants. A
guided walk to the Mounts Island Color Shade Garden will give you a chance to
view bromeliads in a landscape setting. Materials are included in the
registration fee for this workshop. Each participant will take home a plant as
well a chance to win raffle prizes. Rare and hard to find plants will be

This workshop is tailored for the homeowner on a quest for more knowledge on
palms. Kitty Philips, Past President of the Palm Beach Palm and Cycad Society,
will present how to use different palms in the landscape for sun, shade, wet,
and dry locations. Different species available here in South Florida will be
discussed. Landscape placement as well as tips on the growing culture for a
palm will be covered, including mature size, watering, light requirements,
fertilizing, and planting. Live examples will be available and a guided walk

Fall Family Festival

Co-sponsored by the Junior League of the Palm Beaches. This annual family
festival features games, hands-on activities, music, refreshments, and prizes
for all. Favorite activities include pony rides, face painting, seedling

Water in the Garden: Water gardening

Join us for this how-to instructional workshop in the Garden. Participants will
observe the installation of an in-ground water feature. Topics to be covered
include preparation, installation and maintenance of water features. We will
also discuss selection and care of plant and aquatic life and the various
types of water features available. Whether you are considering your first
water garden feature, or want more information and experience to enhance your
existing one, you will find this workshop highly beneficial.
