Last Chance Vegetable Gardening in South Florida

Due to the popularity of this topic we have added another workshop which will
address the plants that can still be planted and harvested before the end of
the season (summer). Mounts’ Horticulturist, Mike Page will teach you how to
successfully grow your own vegetables, covering everything from seed to
germination to harvest. Tips and techniques will be shared on how to have a
productive garden and enjoy fresh chemical-free produce. All participants will
receive a vegetable seedling to take home.

Garden Digital Photography Workshop

Expand your digital photography skills with award-winning photo journalist and
educator John J. Lopinot. John will help you learn how to make the most of the
equipment you own and provide instruction that will help you capture nature’s
beauty in amazing ways. Learn, practice, and improve your skills with a great
instructor & expert. A Digital Single Lens Reflex camera is required. Class is
limited to 15. Workshop times vary per date.

Florida Arbor Day

This special event will include short presentations, a delightful reception
featuring refreshing tropical treats, tours of the beautiful gardens and the
first 100 attendees will receive a tree seedling to plant in their own yard to
cultivate and grow. Keynote Speakers: Dr. Brian Clement, Co-Director,
Hippocrates Health Institute Dr. Clement is an internationally renowned
speaker who has established, organized and directed health programs throughout
the world. He is a champion of health and natural healing who has written
numerous books on the subject. Rich Hawkins, Green Team & Director of
Materials Management, The Breakers Palm Beach, Inc. Mr. Hawkins leads the
famous hotel’s sustainability projects and was the first hotel in Palm Beach
County to receive the Green Lodging Award. He is also a co-founder of
Localecopia, a not-for-profit focusing on sustainable agriculture for the
community.

Beguiling Begonias Workshop

Discover the fabulous perennial landscape begonias that grow so well in South
Florida. This lecture will show you, with slides and live plants, the various
types of rhizomatous, cane, and other begonias that will thrive in your
garden. In the workshop that follows, each participant will learn how to
propagate these begonias and will pot up a tray of assorted cuttings to take
home. Price includes potting materials and begonia cuttings. After the
workshop, you will have the opportunity to expand your begonia collection from
a selection of mature begonias available for sale. Please register by Monday,

Growing & Using Herbs in South Florida

In this open-discussion style lecture, with instructor Dennis Gretton of D&D
Growers we will cover topics including herbs that grow well in South Florida,
culinary and medicinal uses and combinations that grow well in containers.
Each participant will create their own container with a selection of herbs.
Everything from preparing the container, soil mix, and nutrients to choosing,
arranging and actually installing plants will be demonstrated. A large
selection of herbs will be for sale. The Evening Herb Society of the Palm
Beaches will be present to assist and recruit members.

Designing, Creating & Maintaining Your Home Landscape

This four session workshop will take you through all the steps needed
to improve your home landscape. Session One includes an evaluation of your
site conditions, how to avoid common landscape mistakes, and a review of
good design principles. A homework assignment prepares you for Session Two
which begins with a tour of Mounts Botanical Garden to see and discuss a
large number of plants suitable for South Florida. You will also learn
about purchasing, planting and establishing the plants. In Session
Three, experienced gardeners work closely with you to address problem areas
you identify in your landscape, evaluate your ideas and discuss options. With
your new landscape mapped out, Session Four will focus on how to maintain it
with tips and techniques to conserve water, reduce pesticide use, and
minimize labor so you can spend more time enjoying the results. Please

Terrarium: Indoor Gardening

The art of growing and arranging plants in an enclosed container (a terrarium)
is explored in this workshop. Terrariums offer a creative and fun way to have
a miniature landscape right in your home. Instructor Shawna Price of Plant
Dynamics will introduce you to the whimsical yet practical world of gardens
under glass. guide you through building your own terrarium and inform on how
plants can self-sustain in a terrarium. Design your own attractive plant art
piece. All supplies are included in registration fee; choose from a wide
selection of terrarium plants and a glass vessel. Plants and supplies will be
for sale.

Agent. Join us and acquire a basic knowledge of the plants that grow well in
this unique sub-tropical climate that is South Florida. This three session
short course is a combination of seminar and workshop in the Garden. Topics
include: April 3- Plant Selection & Maintenance- Learn about common landscape
plants and trees, installation, fertilizing & pruning. April 10 – Insect &
Disease Control – Learn insect identification and control, including
beneficial insects and diseases. April 17 – Lawn Maintenance – Learn about
the grass varieties, pest and diseases, watering and fertilizing.

features over 80 vendors with an amazing assortment of quality plants and
goods. Palms, orchids, bamboo, begonias, bromeliads, fruit trees, and many
other types of plants will be for sale.This is your opportunity to learn about
the plants that grow well in South Florida and it’s the best place to find
something new for your garden. The American Hibiscus Society, Sunrise-Conrad
Chapter will be having their hibiscus show featuring many of the state's best
blooms and plants will be available at their booth. The Palm Beach County
Woodturners will be selling a large selection of their beautiful
woodturnings. New members receive a free plant from the Mounts’ Nursery

Yoga in the Garden

happen. Kimberly LaRue Certified Yoga Instructor, Licensed Massage
Therapist and Holistic Life Coach will be our instructor. Kimberly has a
unique and playful style, helping you delve deep into your innermost being.
Her classes are designed specifically for each individual based on their
particular and unique needs and leave you in a state of connectedness and
balance: energized, yet relaxed. They are challenging, but easy to follow, and

Versatile Bromeliads

This workshop is for beginner and advanced bromeliad growers to discover the
many bromeliads that grow so well in South Florida. Jeff Hutchinson and Joe
Libertucci of the Boca Raton Bromeliad Society will identify the variations
that thrive in the sunny, shady, and other challenging areas of your Florida
garden. Tips on the best bromeliad growing culture—watering, light
requirements, pests and fertilizing—will be explained using live plants. A
guided walk to the Mounts Island Color Shade Garden will give you a chance to
view bromeliads in a landscape setting. Materials are included in the
registration fee for this workshop. Each participant will take home a plant as
well a chance to win raffle prizes. Rare and hard to find plants will be
offered for purchase at the end of the workshop. Pre-registration is

Palms 101: Not Another Queen Palm workshop

This workshop is tailored for the homeowner on a quest for more knowledge on
palms. Kitty Philips, Past President of the Palm Beach Palm and Cycad Society,
will present how to use different palms in the landscape for sun, shade, wet,
and dry locations. Different species available here in South Florida will be
discussed. Landscape placement as well as tips on the growing culture for a
palm will be covered, including mature size, watering, light requirements,
fertilizing, and planting. Live examples will be available and a guided walk
through Mounts will give you a chance to view palms in the landscape. Palms
will be available for purchase at the end of the workshop.

This workshop with instructors Tom Wells and Sandi Jones of Broward Orchid
Supply, students will learn what orchids need--water, light, fertilizer,
temperature. Attendees are encouraged to bring an orchid up to 6 inches to

mounting on tree fern, cork bark or grapevine. Orchid supplies and small

Fall Family Festival

festival features games, hands-on activities, music, refreshments, and prizes
