Unlocking the Mysteries of Easter Island: The Road to Scientific Discovery
Tuesday, December 15, 2020 @ 10:00 am
Registration is required! CLICK to register.

Speaker: Dr. Carl Lipo, Associate Dean for Research and Programs in Harpur College and a Professor of Anthropology at Binghamton University. For the past 15 years, he has worked on Easter Island and in other areas of the Pacific studying the spread of human populations across Eastern Polynesia.

How does new technology effect the scientific discoveries of the past? What was the true cause of the rapid population decline of the Rapanui people? Why did they create so many of the Moai statues? This event will focus on the processes, tools, and ways in which scientists aim to understand ancient civilizations and the unanswered questions we have about them, through the discoveries of Easter Island.

This unique, educational opportunity is being offered to kick-off the opening of our new permanent exhibit, MOAI AT MOUNTS BOTANICAL, located in the Tropical Forest garden.

Livestream Event Partnership

Scientist in Every Florida School (SEFS) has partnered with Mounts Botanical Garden to bring interdisciplinary content that connects art, culture and science. SEFS is a free program housed within the Thompson Earth Systems Institute at the University of Florida. The SEFS program connects and builds long-term partnerships between teachers and scientists in order to bring current scientific research and big data into classrooms in Florida and beyond.
