South Florida Roses 101: A Beginner’s Crash Course

April 27 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

“They’re too much trouble!” “They have too many problems!” “You just CAN’T grow roses in South Florida!” If you or someone you know has ever said any of these things, this presentation is for you: A crash course teaching everything you need to know about growing roses in South Florida’s tropical climate — and silencing the haters once and for all! In this 60-minute lecture, local rose expert Victor Lazzari will take the audience on a quick but thorough look at the world’s most popular garden flower, debunking myths and mysteries, and demonstrating that —with a little careful planning — it is surprisingly easy to grow beautiful, healthy roses in our part of the country. Proper horticultural practices, troubleshooting common pests, and Victor’s own vetted Top 10 List of the best roses for South Florida gardens will all be included in this exciting discussion!

Presentation is FREE with Plant Sale Admission. No registration required, but space is limited to first-come basis.

Location:  Hutcheson Complex Exhibit Hall A

About Victor Lazzari

Victor Lazzari is professional landscape designer, horticulturist, and published garden writer originally from the hilly farm country of Maryland, where his love of gardens first took hold as a small child. He holds a BA in Landscape Design (University of Maryland), an MA in Landscape Architecture (Florida International University), and a Masters Certificate in Agroecology (also Florida International University). In addition to his current role as the design director of Keeping It Green Landscaping in Fort Lauderdale, Victor recently served as the primary garden designer and rose curator for the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, Florida. A South Florida resident since 2007, Victor’s areas of expertise within South Florida horticulture include herbaceous flowering material, bulbs, cottage gardens, and roses. He is an active guest speaker on these and other topics at various garden clubs and botanical gardens throughout the state. His first book, 100 Roses for the South Florida Garden, was recently published by the University Press of Florida. Most recently, UPF has also decided to publish his second book, tentatively titled The South Florida Cottage Garden. Additionally, Victor recently began work as a freelance features writer for Horticulture magazine, finally giving the South Florida gardening community a seat at the table in the broader dialogue of North American horticulture.
